Two boxers sparring at The Corner

So you wannaget punched?

Our sparring program is for athletes who want to take their boxing knowledge to the next level. It is not for anyone looking to test how tough they are.

It takesanother level

Sparring asks more of your training and of how you take care of yourself. Read this before you apply.

Who it's for

  • Athletes who listen to the coaching staff
  • All Access members of The Corner
  • People training 3–4 days a week for 2–3 months
  • A firm grasp of offensive and defensive fundamentals
  • Balanced footwork
  • Athletes who want to learn

Who it's not for

  • People who want to see how tough they are
  • Anyone training less than twice a week
  • Anyone who's boxed at The Corner less than 2 months
  • Non-members of the club

What to expect

  • Defensive drilling. Lots of it, over and over again.
  • A deeper understanding of the drills we use in everyday classes
  • Landing a clean jab is harder than it looks
  • More humility than you knew you could gain
  • Breathing is harder than you think
  • Nothing beats landing a good body shot. Nothing is worse than taking one.
  • You may feel emotions you weren't expecting

Tips for success

  • Master the basics, and keep practicing them
  • Listen to your coach
  • Show up, and keep showing up
  • Train on your own time too
  • Sleep and hydrate
  • Leave your ego at the door
  • Add neck strength work to your training

Safetyfirst

Sparring brings extra safety demands. Tell your coaches right away about lightheadedness, headaches, dizziness or any other concern, during sparring or after. Protecting yourself starts with speaking up for yourself.

If you're accepted, register with USA Boxing as an athlete, get a physical from your doctor, and turn in your paperwork. Once your USA Boxing passbook arrives and you've handed it to Coach Carrie, you're in.

You must be on an All Access membership. The sparring program adds $75 a month to your dues.

Gear you'll need

  • Mouthguard
  • Boxing shoes
  • Dedicated sparring gloves (used only for sparring)
  • Your own headgear (optional, highly recommended)
